Scott (Developer): When Ben came to us he already had a unique vision for an app. He wanted people to be able to create unique works of art in an incredibly simple, intuitive, and fun way. During the development, this idea emerged as a big part of what makes our app unique, and guided what the app became. We wanted Tangent to be a “Photo Playground” where the interactions felt fun and easy, and could delight the user as they discovered more. This is very different from many other photo tools, where there are limited choices, and the user goes into them with a specific task already in mind. We wanted the app itself to be a place where the user experimented, discovered and inspired themselves. We think we’ve achieved that with Tangent.
Could you discuss how you designed the user interface and user experience?
Ben: We all agreed that Tangent needed to be as easy to use as the iPhone itself, and require no instructions. The interface had to be simple, with a minimal design approach that did not interfere with the creative process. The user should be able to jump in, experiment and play, and create something amazing, quickly.
Tangent has 3 main areas of interaction: Shapes, Fills, and Colors. When selecting one of these areas, the main nav is hidden, and the new function takes its place. Icons are used in place of text to save space and quickly deliver an informative view of that function. Confirming edits is achieved with checkmark to save, X to cancel out.
In other areas, color plays a big role in guiding the user, but without getting too loud. After a playthrough or 2, a user will subconsciously look for the color over what a button actually says. This is reflected in the Export, Social, and Style views.
Scott: In order to foster user creativity and discovery, we wanted a simple and deep user experience. As Ben described above, there are really only three sections within the app, Shapes, Fills, and Colors. Each of these have just a few options, but each option interacts with all the others to create unique and surprising outcomes.
In order to promote user discovery and experimentation we also had to make the app as responsive and intuitive as possible. We did this by building the app’s rendering engine from the ground up to take full advantage of the device’s graphics hardware. We also took advantage of iOS’s multi-touch gestures. Each effect the user applies is reflected in the photo instantly. Each pinch or rotation gesture updates on the photo in real time with no lag. This keeps the experience playful, enjoyable and simple.

Ultimate Torch X...and a lot more !
Ben: The intention was to create an app that used various types of geometric forms that could be combined with photos. The word “Tangent” provided a great dual meaning — the first with its roots in math, and the second with the saying “going off on a Tangent.”
The definition is written as “the point at which a line touches a curve.” This idea felt best visualized through two circles, one inside of the other. The icon needed to reflect what could be created with the app while also being simple. The idea of patterns was an important part of the app so we needed to show this within the icon. It needed to be simple and eye-catching. The basic shape was easy to land on. The colors and weight of the strokes was where we spent a lot of time, especially with the center circled and its striped pattern. You can see a few previous iterations below; we ultimately landed on a more minimal look and pulled out much of the earlier detail.
What software development tools, people, or communities particularly helped you in creating the App? What lessons did you learn in using these resources?
Scott: We built Tangent from the ground up using native iOS frameworks and Objective-C. The UI and controls were all made using Cocoa-Touchand UIGestureRecognizers. This kept the app feeling very responsive and let us build on a lot of work Apple’s developers have already done.
The photo effects rendering engine was built using OpenGL ES 2.0. This let us use the phone’s built in graphics card to the fullest. OpenGL’s fragment shaders also let us do unique per-pixel effects with colors and blends we used. This was a little more complex to code than using a higher level framework but the work paid off with the app’s responsiveness and the code’s flexibility.
Ben: There are 2 communities that played a big role in the creation of Tangent: the mobile artistry and iPhoneography community, and 3rd Space, Co-Working Club for the Creative.
I spent the early part of 2013 revamping another design app of mine, Deco Sketch [iOS, Android, Nook], while involving and listening to the input of users and the iPhoneography community. Through multiple iterations and beta phases, I learned much about what users want and don’t want, as well as how to support and be part of the mobile art community. It also provided an outlet for my own work and a place to get feedback and share.
3rd Space is where I work and where I met Pixite. It’s a co-working space and club in San Diego. It’s an amazing physical space and a great community. Daily, I’m surrounded by talented designers, writers and developers all of which support each others efforts through input, advice, networking and just good ol’ fashioned fun. We have a good time and get things done.
Scott, Eugene and Bob of Pixite are members. We connected earlier in the year after sharing our wares. They’re wizards in the iOS photo management space with their popular apps Web Albums, Unbound, and Flickring. We originally discussed porting a lite version of Deco Sketch to be included as an IAP with Pixite’s apps. In between that process and other work, I conceived Tangent and pitched it them. We released 3 months later.
What I learned working with the guys is that we’re an excellently well-balanced team. Each of us brings a different and required discipline to the table. We push each other while also listening to and considering input. It works very well.
What went right and wrong with Tangent’s development and release?
Ben: At the very top of my pitch to Pixite was this goal: “Create a great app that will get Apple’s attention so that they feature it under New & Noteworthy.” After 3 months of design, development, testing and polishing, we finally submitted Tangent 1.0 for review. Less than two hours after submitting, we received an email from Apple requesting promotional artwork for use in the App Store. Did this mean Apple would feature Tangent? We speculated endlessly.
July 11 was the scheduled release. At just around noon, Apple refreshed the App Store. Tangent appeared in New & Noteworthy on the home page, and was also a featured app in Photo & Video. We achieved our goal.

Two issues at launch were: First, not including iPad out of the gate, and second, a bug with the iPhone 4 where images were getting squashed. Fortunately this didn’t hurt us too bad in reviews, and we’ve since launched 1.1 with both items addressed.
There was one more small mistake which we fortunately were able to solve. When creating a new app in iTunes Connect, the bundle ID was entered wrong. Once set, there’s no way to change it. The only option is to delete the app and create a new one. The problem is, once you delete an app, that app name is no longer available for use. I panicked thinking we’d had have to change the name. Fortunately, I found a workaround. You can use the same name but only if you change the default language. Thank youstackoverflow.com.

Scott: I would say three things that went right were:
1. Learning to work together and bounce ideas off of each other: The app became much much stronger through our collaboration and our discussions.
2. Keeping it simple: There are a ton of ideas that we had for Tangent that we left out of the first release. I think this really helped us make a stronger, more polished and more focused product.
3. Continual Iteration: Many concepts and interactions that made it into Tangent came from playing with the code and experimenting. We weren’t afraid to change the original plan once we tried out ideas and they didn’t quite work, or when we discovered a cool new blend we didn’t know was possible.

Three things that went wrong:
1. Needed a little more testing: The last push for release is always a mad rush. We missed a few minor things in testing as Ben mentioned above.
2. Need to get the app size down: Because we’re loading the patterns and shapes as very high-resolution textures, the app install size is large. We’re looking into ways to get that a bit smaller and possibly rely on vector assets instead.
3. Need more time for reflection: We’re still in the midst of a very successful launch. Over time I’m sure many more things will come to light that we could have done differently or better.
